Learn About Changes to East Grand Avenue at Aug. 7 Event
DOWNTOWN DES MOINES, IOWA (July 31, 2017) – Connect Downtown, an initiative led by the City of Des Moines, Urban Land Institute Iowa and the Greater Des Moines Partnership will host an event on Monday, Aug. 7 to share changes taking place on East Grand Avenue. The event, titled On the Ground: East Grand Avenue Pilot Project and Protected Bike Lane Demonstration, will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on East Grand Avenue between East Second and East Fourth Streets.
Connect Downtown is investigating opportunities to make getting around Downtown safer, more comfortable and more convenient. It aims to improve access to and within Downtown where people walk, ride their bicycle, drive and use transit. The project aims to help build on the current momentum and vibrancy of Downtown Des Moines. The East Grand Pilot Project is among the first updates through the Connect Downtown recommendations to make Downtown safer and more comfortable for pedestrians and cyclists.
The East Grand Avenue Pilot Project will include a lane reconfiguration to include two travel lanes, on-street parking and protected bike lanes. These changes are designed to slow down traffic without significantly reducing commute times, create parking and make the area more walkable and easier to navigate.
The Aug. 7 event is sponsored by Urban Land Institute Iowa, the City of Des Moines, the Greater Des Moines Partnership, the Des Moines Bicycle Collective, City Ride Des Moines, HDR, Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) and the Des Moines Area Metropolitan Planning Organization. The Aug. 7 event is free and open to the public. Learn more and register at DSMpartnership.com/events.
