International Film Competition Returns to Des Moines

July 11, 2018

Team registration deadline ends July 20

Des Moines, IA (JULY 11, 2018) - The 48 Hour Film Project returns to Des Moines for its fourteenth season on the weekend of July 20-22, 2018. Filmmaking teams of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to participate in what is always a fun, challenging, and highly rewarding experience. The competition has been hugely successful in years past, showcasing the extraordinary talent and creativity of the actors, writers, directors, and cinematographers in Des Moines.

The format of the competition depends on improvisation and creativity. Local filmmakers must write, shoot and edit a four- to seven-minute film in just 48 hours, which will then be premiered at the Fleur Cinema in August. On Friday, July 20th, each team will be assigned a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to be included in the film. By Sunday, July 22nd, the final movie must be submitted and ready to screen. All films shown are eligible for audience recognition, and those that are submitted on time are judged for various awards by a local filmmaker panel. The film declared to be the overall "Best Film" of Des Moines will be sent to the international 48 Hour Film Project competition, Filmapalooza, to be screened and judged with over 100 city winners from around the globe. From there, 12 films will be chosen to screen in the Short Film Corner at the Cannes International Film Festival.

The 48 Hour Film Project is a fantastic opportunity to meet other Des Moines filmmakers, gain creative and professional experience, and participate in a national competition. The festival is produced by the Des Moines Social Club.  All are welcome to sign up; registration for teams closes on Friday, July 20.
