Des Moines Performing Arts Invested Show Earns Top Tony Award Honors

DES MOINES, IA — The Broadway League and The American Theatre Wing announced the 2018 Tony Award winners during a televised ceremony Sunday evening (June 10). Des Moines Performing Arts (DMPA) has invested in two winning shows (The Band's Visit and Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical) as part of the Independent Presenters Network (IPN), a consortium of 40 leading Broadway presenters, theaters and performing arts centers. THE BAND’S VISIT was the most awarded show of the evening with a total of 10 awards including Best Musical. Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical won Best Scenic Design of a Musical (David Zinn). Awards for each show are as follows:

  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical (Katrina Lenk)

  • Best Book of a Musical (Itamar Moses)
  • Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre (David Yazbek)
  • Best Lighting Design of a Musical (Tyler Micoleau)
  • Best Sound Design of a Musical (Kai Harada)
  • Best Direction of a Musical (David Cromer)
  • Best Orchestrations (Jamshied Sharifi)
