The Multiplier Effect of DSM's Small Business Community
In Greater Des Moines (DSM), we are doing our part to showcase the importance of shopping local through our DSM Local Challenge, which encourages supporting all types of small businesses in our region by purchasing from those businesses and sharing your support on social media.
The Local Multiplier Effect
By looking local for our goods and services — from attractions to restaurants to retailers and more — we are impacting our community in three key ways. According to the American Independent Business Alliance (AMIBA), this is how shopping local is impacting our community:
- Direct Impact — when a business spends money locally to operate their business
- Indirect Impact — when those dollars spent at other local businesses recirculate
- Induced Impact — when employees, business owners, etc. spend their income locally
Each of these is fundamental in the multiplier effect and benefits others within the DSM community. This is important to the growth and success of our region. When you shop at a national chain, a small portion of your purchase stays in the DSM community. But when you shop locally, you help empower local business owners here, helping them grow and create jobs that will have a direct effect on the region.
Where to Shop Local
In DSM, we want to support our fantastic small businesses, including advertising agencies, dance studios, dental practices, gyms, shops, real estate agencies and many more. Take a look at the comprehensive list of businesses from the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
