How to Celebrate Mother's Day + Support Local Businesses
Mother’s Day is a time of honoring mothers and celebrating the impact they have had in our lives. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, it may seem more difficult to find ways to show our mom(s) how much we appreciate her. Here are a few ideas on how to make this Mother’s Day as special as any other.
Gift Packages
Chocolate Shops
In Downtown Des Moines (DSM), Stam offers local Delivery and pick-up. Gift Mom with a large Dutch chocolate letter or a 16- or 32-piece chocolate box. A short distance from there, you’ll find Beaverdale Confections selling handmade candies, including springtime chocolate lollipops made with rich Belgium chocolate. Ship directly to Mom! Or reserve chocolate-covered berries for Mom from Chocolate Storybook in West Des Moines.
Salon + Spa
In the Historic East Village, the East Village Spa has put together Mother’s Day gift sets, which include a card designed by Ephemera Stationery Studio and can be shipped for a small fee or pick-up with free parking. Choose from a Coffee Lovers set, Me Time set and Tea Lovers set.
Carryout Dining
Find an updated list of restaurants offering takeout and delivery. Order something for Mom or shower her with gift cards to her favorite local restaurants. Don’t forget to tell her about the #DSMlocalchallenge! Check out this list of 39 ways to support local businesses, too — it’s sure to spark some ideas for the perfect Mother’s Day gift.
Crafts
If your mom loves getting crafty, order a do-it-yourself art kit from AR Workshop so she can craft at home. Tack on a to-go kit for the kiddos as well and create together! Glazed Expressions has to-go pottery, too. Purchase a jewelry box you can paint for Mom or that she can paint herself. Painting with a Twist is offering a virtual Mother’s Day event — Twist at Home — via Zoom, with curbside pickup for painting kits offered.
Plants + Flowers
Have Plaza Florist deliver a Mother’s Day Designer Bouquet or celebrate Mom with a delivery from The Wild Orchid. Carmen’s Flowers in Ankeny is another option, and you can call the shop to place an order that includes in-house Chocolate Storybook chocolates. Moms might also enjoy any of the plants for sale through the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden online plant sale.
Photos
At Ivory House Photography, Whitney Warne is offering porch sessions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Why not gift Mom with her own session? Or, get one for your family and gift it to Mom later. April + August offers helpful tips for new moms who are taking their own newborn photos from their phone due to the cancellation of Fresh 48 sessions.
