Caucus 2020 Part III: New Coffee Spots in DSM
Our third post for the Caucus 2020 series highlights new coffeehouses and cafés in Greater Des Moines (DSM). DSM Brew Coffee Co. is home to an extensive coffee menu, which includes the Flat White, Red Eye, Hot Brew and Americano. Try the specialty Nitro Coffee, which uses nitrogen gas to create a bubblier version of the Cold Brew, or add some espresso cubes with the Fizzy Eye. DSM Brew partners with roaster BLK & Bold Specialty Beverages, which contributes 5% of its profits to DSM and national at-risk youth.

Opening in 2019, DreiBerge Coffee is one of the Historic East Village’s newest shops to open. The specialty coffee shop works with single farm coffee suppliers and farmers who partner together. In November 2019, DreiBerge Coffee also unveiled vegan doughnuts!

Originally opening in the St. Paul/Minneapolis area, Dunn Brothers Coffee brought its first location to Iowa this year. Just west of Downtown DSM, the Waukee site serves up sustainably grown coffee imported from regions across the globe. Dunn Brothers also prioritizes coffee produced by women producers. Specialty menu items include the Caramelized Almond Latte and the Mint Mocha. Or try an Infinite Black™ Cold Press or Blended Frappe selection.

Horizon Line Coffee is committed to a responsibility to the planet. This local coffeehouse now serves all drinks in reusable glass jars, or mugs for in-shop patrons. The 12 total oz. Coffee Flight offers a double shot of espresso, cold brew and a pour over. Or, try the Gibraltar, a drink containing equal parts espresso and steamed milk.

Just outside of Downtown DSM is Porch Light Coffeehouse in Ankeny. After opening in 2017, this coffee shop has created a must-stop venue in the heart of Uptown. Seasonal menu items are available, as well as specialties like the Mexican Spiced Hot Chocolate. Porch Light also opens up to a gift store so get your coffee to go and take a minute to shop local by walking through Walnut + Willow.

Looking for a bit more than coffee? Try out St. Kilda Café & Bakery in Downtown DSM’s Temple for Performing Arts, which serves up Breakfast Tacos using guajillo flour tortillas. Other menu items include: Salmon & Eggs, Avocado Toast and the Kimchi Reuben if you go over lunch.
