RFP Open For Art Installation To Transform A Section Of The Downtown DSM Skywalk
GREATER DES MOINES, IA (June 1, 2023) – The Skywalk Reimagined Pilot Committee, made up of Bravo Greater Des Moines, Catch Des Moines, the City of Des Moines, the Greater Des Moines Partnership, Operation Downtown and additional community partners, has opened an RFP for local artists and architects to apply to participate in reimagining a section of the skywalk in Downtown Des Moines (DSM).
The installation will be located in the skywalk section between Fifth Avenue and Fourth Street, just south of Watson Powell Jr. Way. This is the first step in a process to Reimagine the Skywalks, as outlined in the Downtown DSM: Future Forward Vision Plan and Action Plan. The plan calls for the transformation of each section of the skywalk into a different theme while creating a multi-dimensional, multi-use destination that both moves people through and brings people to the skywalk. This first project space has called for the theme of “Let’s Move/Play.” The RFP also calls for a wayfinding solution that indicates "The Green Line.”
“We have the opportunity to make the Downtown DSM skywalk a destination that draws people in with surprise-and-delight elements,” said Jerrica Marshall, Downtown Placemaking Manager at The Partnership. “This project will help create a more welcoming and inviting Downtown skywalk system for residents, workers and visitors, and we are excited to see this section of the skywalk transform into a creative and interactive experience.”
“This project aligns with Bravo Greater Des Moines’ goal of cultivating everywhere, everyday art, and utilizes art as a problem-solving tool and a way to enhance the community,” said Sally Dix, Executive Director of Bravo Greater Des Moines. “We are excited to see this project take shape and look forward to seeing ideas for creative solutions from local artists.”
