Mercy Medical Center, Kindred Healthcare to Hold Ribbon-cutting on Iowa's First Freestanding Rehabilitation Hospital
DES MOINES, Iowa — On Thursday, June 7, at 10 a.m., Mercy Medical Center–Des Moines will hold a formal ribbon-cutting ceremony to signify the opening of Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital, Iowa’s first and only freestanding rehabilitation hospital.
As a joint venture between Mercy Medical Center–Des Moines and Kindred Healthcare, Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital will provide care for patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and other conditions.
“Mercy is excited about the opening of the Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital, the first of its kind in the state of Iowa” said Mike Wegner, senior vice president of operations and chief financial officer of Mercy Health Network. “Through this new facility and our partnership with Kindred Healthcare, our patients in need of advanced rehabilitation services will have the opportunity to receive care locally, where their family members and caregivers can be a part of the recovery process.”
The two-story, 58,000-square-foot facility will feature 50 patient beds, along with gymnasiums outfitted for high-tech therapy devices and treatments; a dedicated brain injury unit complete with monitored rooms, specialized beds and patient lifting equipment; and separate therapy and dining spaces. The hospital will also have a unit exclusively for stroke patients, rooms specially equipped for bariatric patients, and private, family-friendly rooms with sleeper chairs. Patients will have access to an apartment setting where they can practice daily living tasks before they return home and to community re-entry programs to help ease the transition back to home.
“Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital strives to improve patients’ quality of life by helping them recover and restore function from their illnesses or injuries,” said Russ Bailey, chief operating officer of Kindred Rehabilitation Hospitals. “We’re thrilled to have this state-of-the-art facility with Mercy Medical Center–Des Moines, to bring this level of service to the residents in the region who need specialized rehabilitation care.”
Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital is located at 1401 Campus Dr. in Clive.
