Downtown DSM Shines Brighter with New Lighted Walking Path Project

March 7, 2025

GREATER DES MOINES, IA (March 7, 2025) – The Lighted Walking Path on Fourth Street and Court Avenue is now open, transforming the space into a vibrant pedestrian corridor in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). The project, a collaboration between Operation Downtown, in partnership with the Greater Des Moines Partnership, 420 Court Avenue LLC who is managed by Knapp Properties, local architects and artists, enhances safety, comfort and aesthetics in the heart of the city.

A pathway at night with three arches over the path and balled lights strung at the top. There are trees to the left and a building to the right.

Located between Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue, adjacent to the Fourth Street and Court Avenue parking garage, the updated path features a unique lighting installation and three-dimensional art piece. These enhancements create a dynamic visual experience, welcoming visitors day and night.

The installation was led by Slingshot Architecture, with lighting design by Teknephos, steel fabrication by Factor Fabrication and electric work by Tri-City Electric. The artistic lighting and feature piece bring the path to life, while the corten steel structure serves as a modern and durable centerpiece. Both elements were carefully designed to integrate seamlessly into the space without disrupting the existing vegetation.

“By incorporating innovative design and lighting, this project has not only improved the functionality of the path but has also contributed to the overall vibrancy of Downtown Des Moines,” said Renae Mauk, Vice President of Downtown Development at The Partnership. “We encourage everyone to come explore and enjoy this new addition to our community. While visiting the walk path, take a moment to discover and support the local businesses nearby that make Downtown DSM a vibrant and welcoming destination.”

The project, which aligns with the Downtown DSM: Future Forward Vision Plan and Action Plan’s goals to add welcome surprises and foster a vibrant outdoor city, reflects a shared commitment to enhancing public spaces and fostering a sense of community. Knapp Properties will oversee the ongoing maintenance and lighting.
