Market District

 

Soon to be the site of future apartments, restaurants and entertainment, the Market District represents another step forward into Downtown Des Moines’ (DSM's) bright future.

Sitting to the south of East Court Avenue next to and complementing the Historic East Village, the Market District is one of the youngest neighborhoods in Downtown DSM. Formerly an industrial neighbor to Downtown DSM, it’s quickly turning into a new hub of development and activity with apartments and entertainment venues in the works.

Things to Do

A quick walk over the Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway Bridge leads to Principal Park, home to the Iowa Cubs. Also within walking distance is the neighboring Historic East Village shopping and arts district and Historic Court Avenue District entertainment neighborhoods. Additionally, Climb Iowa provides 3,000 square feet of indoor climbing and bouldering for the adventure-seeker. The Market District is not far from Pete Crivaro Park, home to a free zero-entry splash pool, and also the nearby Southeast 14th Street thoroughfare.

Housing

As one of Downtown DSM’s up-and-coming areas, development opportunities for a host of residential buildings, bars and restaurants is ripe in what was formerly zoned as an industrial area.

Craft breweries are leading the burst of regeneration in the Market District with the 2017 addition Peace Tree Brewing promising to whet the appetite of locals and visitors alike. The nearby Iowa Taproom and Molly's Cupcakes make for a great food, drink and dessert progressive dinner option. Additionally, restaurants like Ceviche Bar, Rita's Cantina, Truman's KC Pizza Tavern and Mullets draw walkers, runners and bicyclists from nearby trailheads. What's more, a short walk or bike ride away is the local Italian staples, Tumea & Sons and the Graziano Brothers Italian grocery store. Or try one of Downtown Des Moines’ newest breweries located on the southern edge of the Market District, SingleSpeed.
