Creating moments of surprise and delight is what the Glad You’re Here | Love Downtown DSM series was all about, and the Chalk the Park event on the sidewalks on the southwest side of the Central Library did just that when it ran for the first time in July 2021. The free event asked participants to express their artistic abilities by creating their own chalk masterpieces in Downtown Des Moines (DSM).

This event, like so many other pop-up and activation events, also included food and drinks (lemonade, chocolate milk and ice cream!), live music and even a balloon artist.

At the 2021 event, over 300 guests attended the event and it garnered 107,525 impressions and 3,867 engagements on social media. Local artist Kathleen Roling also created a mural as part of the event. Participants could bring their own chalk or choose from the assortment of free chalk provided on site.
