World Cancer Day in Des Moines to Feature ESPN's V Foundation CEO

World Cancer Day

January 29, 2025

Principal Financial Group® invites the Greater Des Moines (DSM) community to its global headquarters for a powerful World Cancer Day event over the lunch hour on Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025. This educational gathering will bring together experts in cancer research, community leaders and those interested in advancing the fight against cancer.

What’s Happening at the Event?

The program will feature two prominent speakers from the V Foundation for Cancer Research, offering attendees a rare opportunity to hear from leaders in the field. Shane Jacobson, CEO of the V Foundation, and Dr. Susanna Greer, Chief Scientific Officer, will share valuable insights into the ongoing efforts to understand, treat and ultimately cure cancer. They will provide an in-depth look at the critical role that cancer research plays in improving health outcomes.

Founded by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano, the V Foundation for Cancer Research has funded nearly $400 million in cancer research across North America. The Foundation is unique in that 100% of direct donations go toward funding cancer research and programs. This is made possible by an endowment that covers administrative expenses, ensuring that every dollar donated is directly impacting the fight against cancer. During the event, attendees will learn how these funds are used to support life-changing research and how the latest breakthroughs are making a real difference in the lives of cancer patients.

In addition to hearing from cancer research experts, attendees will also be moved by the inspiring stories of hope and resilience from those who have been directly affected by cancer.

Why Is This Event So Important?

Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the United States, making the need for continued research and funding more critical than ever. Principal® recognizes the importance of raising awareness and advancing cancer research, and this event is a step forward in that mission. The event reflects Principal’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the DSM community and supporting initiatives that improve health and wellness for all.
