Taking Flight: A Prehistoric Adventure at the Science Center of Iowa

Pterosaurs Exhibition

February 20, 2025

As we look to the skies today, we marvel at the graceful flight of birds, the agility of bats and the marvels of human aviation. But long before the first feathered wing flapped or the hum of an engine broke the air, another group of creatures ruled the skies: pterosaurs. This winter, the Science Center of Iowa (SCI) invites you to embark on a journey millions of years in the making with Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs, an awe-inspiring traveling exhibit organized by the American Museum of Natural History, New York.

This immersive experience, which opened Dec. 21, 2024, is the largest exhibition of its kind in the United States, and it landed right here in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Whether you’re a lifelong dinosaur enthusiast, a curious learner or someone simply looking for a unique family outing, this exhibit promises to captivate and inspire.

Meet the Masters of Prehistoric Skies

Imagine a world where creatures with wingspans rivaling small airplanes soar overhead, while others, no larger than a sparrow, flit gracefully through ancient forests. Pterosaurs, the first vertebrates to achieve powered flight, represent a diverse and mysterious chapter in Earth’s history. Unlike birds and bats, these reptiles had unique adaptations that made their flight both fascinating and efficient.

The exhibit showcases life-size models, fossil replicas and animations that reveal how these remarkable creatures lived, flew and thrived in prehistoric ecosystems. One moment, you’ll be standing beneath a towering replica of Quetzalcoatlus with its astonishing 33-foot wingspan; the next, you’ll marvel at the petite Nemicolopterus, just 10 inches across — proof of the incredible range of sizes and adaptations among pterosaurs.

Hands-On Discovery for All Ages

At SCI, we believe that the best way to learn is through experience, and Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs is packed with opportunities for hands-on exploration. One of the highlights of the exhibit is the interactive “Fly Like a Pterosaur” experience. Here, motion-sensing technology allows visitors to simulate soaring through the skies of prehistoric Earth. Whether you’re a child imagining life as a prehistoric aviator or an adult curious about the mechanics of flight, this feature brings science to life in a way that’s both educational and fun.

Other interactive elements include a virtual wind tunnel, where you can test the aerodynamics of various pterosaur species, and touchscreen tablets featuring animated profiles that delve into their unique behaviors and diets. These digital experiences are paired with stunning physical displays, such as a recreated Cretaceous seascape showcasing Thalassodromeus pterosaurs diving for fish alongside ancient marine life.

Unlocking Secrets of Ancient Flight

Pterosaur fossils are notoriously rare. Their delicate, hollow bones — perfectly adapted for flight — don’t preserve well, making each discovery a treasure trove of information. Recent advancements in technology, however, have allowed scientists to uncover new details about these creatures. From wing structures to flight mechanics, this exhibit offers a window into groundbreaking research.

One notable highlight is the cast of a giant pterosaur fossil discovered in Romania, believed to represent a new species larger and more robust than any previously found. These kinds of discoveries continue to reshape our understanding of prehistoric life, reminding us that science is always evolving. Visitors will get an up-close look at these fossil replicas and learn how researchers piece together the puzzle of ancient ecosystems.

Why This Exhibit Matters

Pterosaurs: Flight in the Age of Dinosaurs offers a rare and comprehensive look into the lives of these extraordinary creatures. We’re excited to bring this exhibit to Iowa, giving visitors of all ages the chance to explore the cutting-edge science behind recent fossil discoveries, examine life-size pterosaur replicas and experience firsthand the mechanics of pterosaur flight in our interactive exhibits.

But beyond its scientific significance, this exhibit is a reminder of the wonder and diversity of life on Earth. Pterosaurs were masters of adaptation, evolving specialized features to survive and thrive in their environments. Their story invites us to reflect on the delicate balance of our own ecosystems and the incredible forces of nature that continue to shape our world.
