Stretching the Love for the Arts
Sharing yoga is one of my very favorite things to do. It has been my profession for the past 13 years. I am thrilled at the opportunity to share it with my community in and around Downtown Des Moines (DSM).
Just like the arts, yoga is a practice that has the potential to provide connections that may not come about in ordinary life. We need special events that pull us out of our everyday experiences and help us see the extraordinary that surrounds us. Both yoga and the arts provide us opportunities to learn about ourselves, each other and the world we share. Both also have the power to heal and inspire. I think we could all use a little of those things in our lives.
Des Moines Performing Arts is an invaluable community entity in the breadth and depth of programming that they offer. Like so many other businesses and organizations, they've taken a major hit this past year. As we all start to venture out and take part in our community again, I hope that DMPA is one of the places everyone will be visiting soon!
My background is in theater education. I credit DMPA and their school outreach programs with lighting the fire for my desire to teach and take part in creating meaningful events many moons ago when I was brought to the Des Moines Civic Center on an elementary school trip. The work of DMPA has a very special place in my heart, as I know it does for so many others.
Yoga on the Commons in 2021
It is a pleasure and privilege to be able to invite other yoga teachers from around the community to come and share their skills this summer. Our lineup of instructors is incredible! Each has something special to offer, and each will shine a new light on the practice. You won’t want to miss a single one!
We are delighted to have the support of local businesses like Evolve Juicery and Kitchen and Raygun who have both contributed donations for participants in our event.
Consider this ... if 20 participants gave just $10 each (And that’s a steal considering the caliber of yoga instruction you’ll be receiving at this event!), we could raise $200 for DMPA. That’s enough to cover the cost of inviting a classroom of 30 students to attend a daytime school performance, otherwise known as the Applause series.
Just think of the impact we could make as a community for our community.
That is the intention behind Yoga on the Commons.
Please join us in supporting DMPA, one of our community’s prized institutions, and enjoy Downtown DSM from a new perspective. I bet not many of us have gotten to see the Crusoe Umbrella upside down in Down Dog! Come check that experience off your bucket list this and every Sunday through August.
