Spotlight on Des Moines Ballroom
The Des Moines Ballroom began in the late 80s as a conglomerate of social dancers in Greater Des Moines (DSM), including those who just wanted a place to practice dancing together. Over time this cohort evolved to more of a business model and leadership changed hands a few times over the decades. In 2021, the Des Moines Ballroom finally settled into a permanent home in the historic Sherman Hill neighborhood of Downtown Des Moines (DSM). What was otherwise an unnoticed commercial building now has new life with three beautiful dance studios spanning two levels.

Styles offered include a wide range: Salsa, Swing, Waltz, Tango, Cha Cha and so many more! Students of all ages will be found cutting it up together, mostly with the goal of having fun. Additionally, many couples prepare for their first wedding dance at Des Moines Ballroom through a series of private lessons leading up to their big day.

More Than Ballroom Dance in Downtown Des Moines
Des Moines Ballroom may be a dance studio, indeed, but it’s also a factory for joy. People come here for all different reasons, and they all leave with a smile. Some may be preparing for a big event, while others are just looking to step outside their comfort zone and try something new. While the ballroom certainly is a place for anyone looking to seriously master a dance and even compete in competitions, most of our participants are here for social reasons. That’s why on any Friday night you’ll find a packed dance floor at our weekly social dance party. And, if you’re interested, it is open to the public to join in!

The Des Moines Ballroom is also very proud to facilitate partner programs for local organizations including the American Parkinson’s Disease Association of Iowa (pictured at top of page), Above + Beyond Cancer and the Iowa Department for the Blind. These partnerships tailor ballroom classes specifically to each demographic, while continuing to focus on mastering the art of dancing together — and absolutely prioritizing fun!
