Summer is an exciting time for many families and often includes vacations, picnics and swimming. In the U.S., 42% of all unintentional deaths occur in the months of May through August.

Top 5 Must-Have Safety Items for Summertime

Here are five must-have safety items to help keep you and your family safe this summer! All these products and many more are available at the Hannah Geneser Learning Center and Safety Store.

  • Life Jackets – Wearing a life jacket, especially in open water, reduces the risk of drowning in case of accidental falls or emergencies. Their visibility and design also aid in rescue efforts and enhance overall safety.
  • Helmets – Whether you’re riding a bicycle, scooter or skateboard, if there are wheels under your feet, there should be a helmet on your head. Helmets are proven to drastically decrease head injuries from falls when worn properly.
  • Car Seats – If your family is planning any road trips this summer, be sure your child is riding in an appropriate car seat for their age, height, weight and developmental level. Certified Car Seat Technicians are a great resource to ensure your most precious cargo is riding safely!
  • Window Safety Devices – Wanting to open the windows to enjoy a breezy, summer day? Make sure your windows are safe by properly installing window stops or window guards to help prevent a possible fall. Remember, screens are designed to keep bugs out but they are not designed to keep kids in.
  • Fire Alarms and Escape Ladders – House fires are common throughout the year. Many house fires begin in the kitchen and can spread within seconds throughout your home. Be sure your home is equipped with properly working alarms and emergency exits.

The Hannah Geneser Learning Center and Safety Store, located in Downtown DSM, is a beautiful space dedicated in honor of Hannah Ray Geneser. On March 21, 2011, Hannah died from a tragic accident when a screen gave way, and she fell from an open window. Following her devasting and untimely death, the Hannah Geneser Foundation was established by her family.

Hannah Geneser

The mission of the Foundation is to honor Hannah by helping to prevent the accidental death or injury of children through public awareness and education. This space was designed to embody Hannah’s playful spirit and beauty, but also to capture the attention of children and their parents so they will take the necessary steps to empower themselves with knowledge and the resources to create a safer living environment.

Plan to visit our store to keep your family safe all year long!
