Sensory-Friendly Hours

Sensory-Friendly Hours at the Science Center of Iowa offer a quieter, less crowded environment, making it a welcoming space for families with a loved one on the autism spectrum or those with sensory processing differences. While the Science Center is typically filled with lively sights and sounds, these specially designated hours provide a more comfortable experience, allowing families to explore at their own pace. Additionally, Sensory Guide signage throughout the facility helps visitors identify areas with varying levels of audio, visual and activity stimuli, ensuring a more enjoyable and accessible visit for all. SCI also has sensory backpacks — including noise-reducing headphones, sunglasses, weighted stuffed animals and fidget materials — which are available to check out at the front desk during our open hours.

Sensory-Friendly Hours are currently planned for the second Tuesday of each month from 4-7 p.m. Admission is free. Advanced ticket registration is required.
