For 2020, the Des Moines European Heritage Association (DMEHA) has announced that it will change its annual in-person holiday experience to “CDM Curbside,” presented by Christkindlmarket Des Moines.

CDM Curbside customers can pre-order all of their favorite items traditionally found at Christkindlmarkets from the vendors they’ve come to know and love AND a few new faces. Customers can peruse traditional food and hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind gifts in advance and pick up their purchases at Principal Park during the Curbside Pickup.

Christkindlmarket Des Moines — An “Unsurprising” Success

It might be about 700 years or so younger than some of its European counterparts, but Christkindlmarket Des Moines has already made itself a holiday tradition for many Iowans. To date, more than 130,000 people have visited the market in the four years that a live event was able to be held — something many thought not possible since most Americans expect a warm mall experience for holiday shopping rather than a largely outdoor venue.

The all-volunteer Christkindlmarket Des Moines is unique for these types of markets, with many today financed and managed by large companies or cities. Christkindlmarket Des Moines is completely financed by sponsors and grassroots donations, such as those who purchase the limited-edition Glühwein mugs each year.

Christkindlmarket Des Moines and all activities of the DMEHA are designed to help bring the state’s European cultural activities and traditions from the past alive today and share them with all people who call Iowa home, regardless of their ethnic or cultural background. Learning about all cultures has innate value and DMEHA strives to foster a welcoming inclusiveness for all to celebrate the past, present and future of European-based culture, cuisine, music, language and more.

The next Christkindlmarket Des Moines is slated for Dec. 2-5, 2021. Find more information at christkindlmarketdsm.com.
