Jumbo Walking Taco Boat or Flyin’ Hawaiian? Big Red Food Truck + Top Bun Ready to Serve at the 2023 Out to Lunch Season
Shon Bruellman is no stranger to Out to Lunch events. Since Out to Lunch first became a staple of the Downtown Des Moines (DSM) summer lunch hour in 2017, his catering business, the Big Red Food Truck, has taken part in some capacity in order to continue interacting with the community. This year, the Big Red Food Truck will also take part in the Downtown Farmers’ Market and other farmers’ markets around the region, selling pizzas and mingling with marketgoers, in addition to attending Out to Lunch events.
Out to Lunch will also welcome Dave Barry and Top Bun to the summer series in 2023. The food truck has been part of the event for around five years now. Barry loves being involved in city events and, in the beginning, was surprised by how well-attended the weekly Out to Lunch events were by workers in Downtown DSM.
What to Expect with Big Red Food Truck
Big Red Food Truck doesn’t specialize in just one thing. Where’s the fun in that? Instead, Bruellman opts to offer a variety of menu items from “Shon’s Famous Fried Taco” to “Fried Lobster Ravioli Bites” to “Beef and Lamb Gyros.” Their bestselling items? According to Bruellman, you can’t beat the orange rice bowls or the teriyaki grilled chicken options. When making food for local events, Bruellman and his staff work quickly, ensuring those in line aren’t waiting long and that they are adding to the fun, energetic lunch environment.
What to Expect with Top Bun
Top Bun offers specialty burgers, fries, hotdogs and even a vegan option so the truck can cater to all diets. And if you don’t see exactly what you want, most menu items are customizable. If you stop by Top Bun, Barry invites you to try the ever-popular “Flyin’ Hawaiian,” featuring grilled pineapple, roasted red peppers, provolone and a teriyaki mayo, or the “Truffle Fries,” with their truffle oil, parmesan cheese and spicy mayo drizzle.
For Bruellman and Barry, Out to Lunch events are an important part of the downtown landscape. Food trucks can attend events of all sizes and draw people together as a larger community. Continuing to foster the relationships between food truck staff and Downtown DSM community members helps move people out of the isolation brought on by the pandemic and towards a more collaborative, energized region — and that’s an exciting thing!
