Harris Family Chooses to Make Downtown DSM Home
After living in Johnston for a few months and then moving to Mason City, Noah and Madeline Harris knew they wanted to get back to Greater Des Moines (DSM). So, when Noah found the opportunity to apply for a new job with the Greater Des Moines Partnership, he jumped at the chance. Now, newly hired as The Partnership’s Investor Relations Specialist, he and Madeline are discovering all that the region has to offer, especially when it comes to Downtown Des Moines (DSM) amenities.
Why Downtown Des Moines?
Noah and Madeline are thankful that downtown caters to young adults and families. When Madeline became pregnant, having a midwife nearby was important to her. The options in the region are much more robust than other places in Iowa. The couple is eager to get out and about to Downtown DSM events. Already, they’ve found there is so much going on — from the Downtown Farmers’ Market to other farmers’ markets in cities like Grimes, Johnston and the Historic Valley Junction neighborhood, the opportunity to shop local for fresh fruits and vegetables is around every corner.
The ease of walking to an event instead of making a day trip of visiting Des Moines is not only convenient, but stress-free, too. Downtown trails offer opportunities for them to walk their dogs with ease — two Siberian huskies who live with them at their house near Principal Park.
Other places they frequent include the Lauridsen Skatepark, the Historic East Village and for trivia at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. The couple plans to attend Iowa Cubs games this summer, visit Downtown DSM breweries and ride bikes on the trails as well.
Noah and Madeline found an affordable option when it came to housing. Madline’s advice is to look for housing as soon as you know you’ll be moving and know what you want. Then, go for it. While it can be scary to make the jump at first, once you’re living in the community, it’ll be worth it. Affordability wasn’t too much of a factor and they were able to find the right thing for their family — and now they get to know and enjoy all the downtown amenities of Des Moines at their leisure.
