As the warm summer days roll by, Des Moines Parks and Recreation is thrilled to offer a wide range of family-friendly activities to keep you and your loved ones entertained and exploring all that Des Moines has to offer. From roller skating and yoga to movies under the stars and fun nature-centric events, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Let's dive into the exciting lineup of events and activities we have planned for you!

Gray's Lake Park: A Hub of Activity

Yoga in the Park

Start your Saturday mornings with tranquility and relaxation at Gray's Lake Park in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Join us for Yoga in the Park at 9 a.m. for a free yoga session led by experienced instructors. Breathe in the fresh air, stretch your body and find your inner peace in the beautiful surroundings of the park.

Soft-Serve Ice Cream

Indulge in a sweet treat after your activities at Gray's Lake Park. Thanks to the Friends of Des Moines Parks, we now have a new soft-serve ice cream machine. It's the perfect way to cool down and satisfy your sweet tooth (at a price that can’t be beat).

Pedal Kayak and Sit-Down Paddleboard Rentals

Looking for a unique way to explore the lake off the trail loop? Try out our new pedal kayak or sit-down paddleboard watercraft rentals. These new additions provide a fun and active way to enjoy the water and take in the scenic views of Gray's Lake.

Paddle & Pick Up Volunteer Event

If you're looking to give back to the community, join us for the "Paddle & Pick Up" volunteer event on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Help us keep Gray's Lake clean and beautiful while enjoying a day on the water. It's a rewarding experience that combines environmental stewardship with outdoor fun.

Explore Our Parks and Aquatic Locations

Des Moines Parks and Recreation is proud to maintain 77 award-winning parks and 27 aquatic locations, including three aquatic centers, two pools, 15 spraygrounds, three wading pools and four splash pools. These spaces offer endless opportunities for families to play, relax, connect with nature or even find your new favorite cool-down zone!

Greenwood Park: Nature and Education

Big Bugs on the Trail

Head over to Greenwood Park, just outside of Downtown Des Moines, and discover the fascinating Big Bugs on the Trail exhibit. This unique outdoor display features larger-than-life insect sculptures that will captivate both kids and adults alike.

Buggin' Out Environmental Education Event

Join us for the Buggin' Out Environmental Education event on Tuesday, July 16 and Tuesday, July 30, 2024. This free event is perfect for families who want to learn more about the natural world and the important role insects play in our ecosystem. Through interactive activities and educational booths, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the bugs around us.

Free Flicks: Movies in the Park

Gather your family, bring a blanket and enjoy a movie night under the stars with our FREE FLICKS series. Our upcoming movie nights include:

  • Migration: Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Ashworth Pool Parking Lot
  • Mario Bros. Movie: Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, at Riverview Park
  • E.T.: Saturday, Aug. 10, 2024, (in conjunction with the STAR PARTY at Ewing Park, where families can marvel at the Perseid Meteor Shower)

Brenton Skating Plaza: Year-Round Fun

Family Skate Night

While Brenton Skating Plaza is synonymous with winter fun, we're excited to have you join us at the plaza during the warm months as well! Join us for Family Skate Night on Friday, August 2, 2024. Bring your own roller skates and glide under the stars with your family for a night of laughter and joy.

Zumba Classes

Get ready to move and groove with our NEW Zumba Classes at Brenton Skating Plaza on Sunday mornings. Each class is just $5, making it an affordable way to stay fit and have fun. Whether you're a Zumba pro or a beginner, our instructors will guide you through a high-energy workout that feels more like a dance party than exercise.
