Enjoy the Beauty of Downtown DSM at Brenton Skating Plaza
I have a very distinct memory that comes to mind anytime somebody mentions ice skating. I’m in junior high, a group of my girlfriends have invited me to go ice skating and I’m really excited. I’ve always enjoyed roller-blading, how difficult could ice skating be? I’m talking to my mom about this new adventure I’m about to try out and she tells me to follow her down to the basement. Tucked on a shelf in the storage room is a decent sized blue box with a picture of white figure-skates on the outside. I’d never been more thankful that my mom and I have the same shoe size. They’re almost like new. Beautifully white with the shiny metal blade on the bottom. Not a scratch or mark on them. They were hers from when she was in high school. I could hardly contain my excitement to get to the rink and put them on!
Stepping on the Ice
We get to the rink and I put the skates on. I step cautiously on to the ice, thankful there’s a railing to help me around. After a few cautious laps, I step away from the railing and start skating around with more and more confidence. The white figure skates fit perfectly, and I feel like I’m flying as I continue to go around and around.
From that day forward, ice skating has been one of my favorite activities when the temperatures drop, and the snow starts to fall. When you skate on to the ice at Brenton Skating Plaza, take a deep breath and look around. You’re in the heart of Downtown DSM, this beautiful city is wrapping it’s arms around you as you go around and around on the ice. Before you know it, your mind will begin to clear, the cold temps will disappear and all that will be left is the here and now.
Fun DSM Treats After Skating
It’s great that Brenton Skating Plaza is located in the Historic East Village. When my fiancée can finally convince me to get off the ice, we go find a great place to warm up and get something to eat. With the great location, there’s so many places to pick from. We can jump down the road and have a burger and cereal shake from Zombie Burger. If we’re looking for a place a little more zen, we can stop at Scenic Route Bakery and grab a steaming cup of coffee and a sweet treat. Or, if we feel like really treating ourselves, we will go to my favorite restaurant in DSM, Alba.
