Discovering the Power of Art with the Momentum Art Program

Momentum in Downtown DSM

July 22, 2024

In a world where creativity knows no bounds, the Momentum Art Program stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for individuals with disabilities and mental health conditions. Located in Downtown Des Moines’ (DSM’s) vibrant artist community, Mainframe Studios, Momentum is more than just an art studio; it is a sanctuary of creativity, healing and growth. This program offers a safe and inclusive environment where individuals can express themselves freely through art, bridging the gap between themselves and a world that doesn’t always understand them.

A Safe Haven for Creativity and Healing in Downtown Des Moines

Momentum, a program of Community Support Advocates, is dedicated to providing a space where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can explore the transformative power of art. Our studio is a place where individuals can find solace, connect with others and embark on a journey of self-discovery. Art has long been recognized as a therapeutic tool, and at Momentum, we harness this potential to foster healing and personal growth.

Free Art Supplies

One of the core principles of the Momentum Art Program is accessibility. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to create, regardless of their financial situation. That's why we provide free art supplies to all our participants. From paints and brushes to canvases and sketchbooks, we ensure that our artists have everything they need to bring their visions to life.

Downtown Des Moines Art Workshops and Mentorship

At Momentum, we understand that artistic growth doesn't happen in isolation. That's why we offer a variety of workshops and mentorship programs designed to help our artists reach new heights. Our workshops cover a wide range of topics, from traditional painting techniques to contemporary mixed media approaches. These sessions provide a platform for artists to experiment with new mediums, learn from each other and gain confidence in their abilities.

Mentorship is another cornerstone of our program. We connect emerging artists with established professionals who can offer guidance, support and insight into the art world. These mentorship relationships are invaluable for artists looking to take their work to a more professional level. Through personalized feedback and encouragement, our mentors help artists refine their skills, build their portfolios and navigate the often-complex path to artistic success.

A Community-Focused Approach

The Momentum Art Program is not just about individual growth; it's about building a community. We are deeply rooted in the belief that art can bring people together and foster a sense of belonging. Our studio is a place where friendships are formed, stories are shared and everyone is welcomed with open arms.

Community-Focused Art

Our community-focused approach extends beyond the walls of our studio. We regularly host art exhibitions, open studios and participate in community events that showcase the incredible talent of our artists. These events provide an opportunity for our participants to share their work with the wider community, receive feedback and gain recognition for their achievements. They also serve as a reminder of the power of art to inspire, connect and heal.

The Impact of Momentum

The true impact of the Momentum Art Program can be seen in the stories of our artists. Take Katie, for example, a talented artist who joined Momentum after struggling with her mental health since going through the foster care system. Through our program, Katie found a way to express herself, make lasting connections, and gain experience. Her artwork has not only improved her well-being but has also been featured in several local exhibitions, earning her recognition and boosting her confidence. Her journey from novice to professional artist is a testament to the transformative power of our program.

Then there's Josh, a young man with autism, who discovered a passion for art at Momentum. With the support of Momentum staff, volunteers and other artists, Josh has honed his skills and won best in show at our annual Works of Growth and Recovery exhibition.

These stories are just a glimpse of the countless lives touched by Momentum. Each artist who walks through our doors brings their unique perspective and experiences, contributing to the rich tapestry of our community. We celebrate their achievements, support their struggles and stand beside them as they navigate their artistic journeys.

Showcasing Talent: Annual Art Exhibitions in Downtown Des Moines

Art exhibitions are a vital part of the Momentum Art Program, providing our artists with the opportunity to share their work with the wider community and gain the recognition they deserve. One of our most anticipated events is the annual juried art exhibition titled "Works of Growth and Recovery," held each October. This exhibition celebrates the artistic achievements of individuals who identify as having a disability or mental health condition.

“Works of Growth and Recovery” encourages artists of all kinds to submit their artwork for consideration. The exhibition culminates in a celebration at Mainframe Studios, where the selected works are displayed throughout the building. This event not only showcases the incredible talent of our artists but also serves as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of art and the importance of inclusivity, accessibility and community. It’s a night of celebration, highlighting the strength and resilience of our artists.

In addition to "Works of Growth and Recovery," Momentum hosts monthly exhibitions during Mainframe's First Fridays. These exhibitions provide ongoing opportunities for our artists to display their work, engage with the public and receive valuable feedback. First Fridays are a vibrant part of the local art scene, attracting art lovers, collectors and supporters from across the community. By participating in these events, our artists gain exposure and build connections that can further their artistic careers.

We invite you to join us in our mission by contributing in any way you can. Here are some ways you can support the Momentum Art Program:

Every act of kindness, whether it’s a donation of supplies, money or time, helps us create a brighter future for individuals with disabilities and mental health conditions.

Together, we are building a community where art is accessible to all and where everyone has the opportunity to heal, grow and thrive through creativity.
