Discovering Downtown Des Moines: A Place to Work, Play and Explore

Downtown Des Moines (DSM) has been a significant part of my life for many years, and I absolutely love the opportunities it offers. Working downtown allows me to enjoy the incredible businesses, restaurants and countless festivals and events that bring the city to life.

One of my favorite parts of the Downtown DSM experience is the convenience of parking and walking through the skywalk system to events at Wells Fargo Arena or the Des Moines Civic Center. The skywalk not only protects me from the elements, but it also offers fantastic views of the city. It’s an efficient way to navigate downtown, connecting me seamlessly to my favorite destinations.

My appreciation for downtown began in my childhood when I rode the city bus to school. I had to transfer downtown, and after school, I often found myself wandering through the skywalks, imagining what it would be like to work or live in the heart of the city. That dream eventually became reality, and I’ve enjoyed watching Downtown DSM evolve over the years.

Downtown Des Moines Things to Do

New restaurants and businesses continue to enhance downtown, yet staples like Johnny’s Hall of Fame and Court Avenue Restaurant & Brewing Company in the Historic Court District remain, offering familiar places to gather before or after events at Wells Fargo Arena. Whether you’re looking for a casual bite or a lively atmosphere, there’s something for everyone.

Beyond great dining, downtown is home to exciting events and attractions, from Iowa Wild and Iowa Cubs games to seasonal celebrations like Christkindlmarket and the Downtown Farmers’ Market. These experiences create a vibrant environment for residents, workers and visitors alike.

If you have not been to Downtown Des Moines recently, now is the time to explore! With so much to see and do, you’ll quickly understand why I love being a part of this incredible city.
