Downtown DSM Bike Trail Highlights

Greater Des Moines’ (DSM’s) trail system is a popular thoroughfare and a fun activity or destination. We’re here to share several interesting and surprising things to find along the trails around Downtown Des Moines (DSM) — including a few gems in plain sight, and perhaps some you’ve never even heard of! Let’s take a closer look.

1. Downtown Des Moines Bridges

Okay, so the bridges are obvious! But when’s the last time you read up about the significance, history and unique architecture of these highly visual landmarks? For example, if you don’t know about the back-in-the-day drama of the Jackson Avenue Bridge, it’s a doozy!

2. Birthplace of Des Moines Memorial Cabin

Near MLK Jr. & Meredith Trails | 306-308 SW Water St., Des Moines
Sitting near Principal Park, the 1840s log cabin serves as a memorial to the military outpost, Fort Des Moines No. 2. In 1846, the city of Des Moines was established near this site, where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers converge. Additionally, at least eight other historical markers are located within walking distance. (Of note, the Des Moines Historical Society is actively fundraising for upgrades to the historical site.)

3. Interactive Ball Wall at Cohen Park

Near SE Connector or John Pat Dorrian Trails | 1000 Scott Ave., Des Moines
Newly opened to the public in spring 2024, Cohen Park has several new-to-Iowa and unique features. An interactive ball wall, called SUTU, provides park visitors with the opportunity to play games, garner physical fitness and practice their soccer skills using a light-up gameboard. Players can play solo or with multiple others. Additionally, Cohen Park has a half-basketball court, multiple bouldering walls (pictured at top of page) and a historical landmark.

4. Natural Playscape at MacRae Park

Near the Meredith Trail | 1021 Davis Ave., Des Moines
This family-friendly gem is one you won’t want to miss! The recently renovated MacRae Park offers tons of things to explore, including the natural playscape made of refurbished tree logs, with nearby sprayground including interactive water troughs, stone cave, giant swing and sandy digging area. Additionally, you’ll find a trail to explore with new trail bridge, park shelters, picnic tables, charcoal grills and a new boardwalk near the stocked pond with fishing pier. Be sure to stop at the EMC Overlook for a scenic view of Downtown DSM. Did you know, MacRae Park was named in 1919 after Iowa’s first casualty of World War I, Donald MacRae. The land was originally purchased by the City of Des Moines in 1897, initially called South Park.

5. Kiwanis Miracle League

Near MLK Jr. & Meredith Trails | 529 SW 5th St., Des Moines
Come experience baseball like you’ve never seen before. The Kiwanis Miracle League provides a place for children with special needs to play baseball, where families can enjoy outdoor recreation and a little competition, too. And the game play is unique: Each player gets to bat, each player also scores and every game ends with a tie so both teams are winners. The smiles are contagious! Stop by on a Saturday to cheer for the amazing athletes as they play their hearts out, or you can sign up to volunteer as a buddy on the field. Bonus: There’s no admission charge, and a concession stand is available on-site!

6. Arie Den Boer Arboretum

Near Bill Riley Trail & Meredith Trails | 1201 George Flagg Pkwy, Des Moines
Nestled within the 400+ acres of woods at Water Works Park is a luscious arboretum made up of nearly 800 crabapple trees — including hundreds of different varieties. Although the trees bloom with fragrant and colorful blossoms in late April and early May, the collection of beautiful trees is a sight to behold (and explore!) year-round. This is a popular spot for planned or impromptu photo sessions!
