Brewing Brighter Futures: Peace Tree Brewing Co. Hosts Happy Hour Fundraiser for Everybody Wins! Iowa

Peace Tree Brewing Co. in Des Moines’ East Village will be hosting a happy hour fundraiser to support Everybody Wins! Iowa’s Power Read program on Friday, May 3. Peace Tree will donate $1 to Everybody Wins! Iowa for every item sold between 4 and 7 pm on that date. Come on out for happy hour and help raise funds to match Greater Des Moines (DSM) students with mentors. Power Read is offered free of charge to both schools and our students’ families, so every dollar counts.

About the Everybody Wins! Iowa Power Read Program

If you’re not familiar, Everybody Wins! Iowa (EWI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring children’s success in school and life through weekly one-to-one read-aloud experiences with caring adult mentors. These ongoing read-aloud sessions are known as our Power Read program. During Power Read, elementary students in the program use reading as a vehicle to develop their social and emotional learning, build positive relationships with their mentors and practice reading in a low-pressure setting, which prepares them for success in school and life.

Our matches pick books that interest the student, choose who reads or to share the reading, and do reading-related activities or have informal conversations. Power Read centers on read-aloud experiences and complements the education that our students are receiving by giving them a time where they can consistently practice their reading skills outside of the classroom.

Students are recommended for the program by their teachers if they fit into one or more of these three categories:

1. The student displays a need for a consistent mentor.
2. The student is below their grade level in reading.
3. The student is an English Language Learner.
