Q&A
What’s a day in your job like? A typical day involves a couple of things. I usually try to start the day by visiting with a prospective client at a local coffee shop or at my office and I use that as a time to get to know them and understand what’s important to them. After that meeting, I usually follow up with a review of what we talked about and then begin putting a plan together that will help them. Throughout the day I might check in with clients, visit with people in my network, or take time to write articles for my website (definitely need to make more time for that).
What are your passions outside of work? When you’re not at work, what will we find you doing? Outside of work, you can find me doing something throughout the city. I love to be downtown, especially in the summer with the Des Moines Farmers' Market and baseball games. I took up cycling about a year ago so a lot of my free time involves getting out on the trails and enjoying some of the local breweries. I’m also active with Habitat for Humanity and the Habitat Young Professionals (HYP) and enjoy interacting with the future homeowners.
Where’s your favorite (something) in Greater Des Moines (DSM)? My favorite thing in Des Moines is the Historic East Village and the Shattering Silence monument just to the south of the Iowa State Capitol.
What role has mentorship played in your career? It sounds cliché, but mentorship has played a huge role in my career and in my life as a whole. My mentors have helped me to define who I am as a person and understand what’s actually important to me. They’ve shared the mistakes they’ve made throughout their lives so that I hopefully don’t make the same ones, but they’ve also given me support and a listening ear for the ideas that I have for my career. I definitely don’t think I would be in the position I’m in, without having the mentors I do.
What are your words to live by? Walk with the wise and become wise. Life’s all about surrounding yourself with people that are going to make you a better person and support you.
What projects have you been involved with in YPC? I’ve been active on the Professional Development Committee the last two years I’ve been in YPC.
