New WDM Sports Complex is now the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex
City Manager Tom Hadden announced this morning that the new hockey and soccer complex being planned in West Des Moines will be named the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex as a result of the company’s $5 million commitment to support the facility. The proposed facility was announced last summer and work has been ongoing to buildout the project and provide the financial and management structure.
Hadden confirmed this morning after a meeting with potential supporters and donors that nearly $8 million has already been raised to fund the new RecPlex, which will feature two ice hockey rinks with room for up to four sheets of ice, three indoor soccer fields, three indoor basketball courts, availability for six volleyball courts, five outdoor soccer fields, locker rooms and amenities, 3,000 square feet of meeting space, 20,000 square feet of exhibit space and a 3,000 seat main arena with stage.
Hadden said the new $30 million facility is a direct result of a public private partnership that will blend $10 million in individual and corporate donations with approximately $18.5 million supported by Hotel Motel tax funds and $1.5 million in potential grant funding.
Hadden said the MidAmerican Energy RecPlex is an ideal project to receive the City’s hotel motel tax funds because it will draw people to the region.
“Our plan is to use the dollars collected from people visiting our city to fund a regional attraction that provides a place for our kids to participate in athletics and much needed space for adult sports, smaller conventions, trade shows and corporate gatherings,” he said.
Kathryn Kunert, Vice President, Economic Connections and Integration at MidAmerican Energy Company, said “MidAmerican Energy is more than an energy provider, we are very much part of the communities we serve. That’s why we are proud to support projects that promote economic development through strengthening and enhancing the quality of life for our customers and communities.”
The proposed 60-acre project site is located along the south side of Grand Avenue and east of Jordan Creek Parkway just 2.3 miles south of Jordan Creek Town Center and 1.6 miles west of Interstate 35.
Renderings are now available that show the interior and exterior of the facility as well as some of the amenities that will be a part of the MidAmerican Energy Company RecPlex. For more information, visit the RecPlex website at midamericanrecplex.com.
