Holiday Happiness

December 17, 2024

While the holiday season is joyful, it can also be stressful for many of us. From holiday shopping to cooking to traveling from place to place, feeling overwhelmed is extremely common. In fact, two in five Americans (41%) feel their stress increases during this time of the year.

Here are five tips and strategies to help navigate and reduce holiday stress this season

1. Take Time for Yourself

Do whatever makes you feel refreshed. Whether that’s getting a coffee with a friend, reading a book or getting a workout in.

2. Stick to a Budget

To avoid overspending, plan ahead so you are aware of your holiday expenses and can set a realistic budget yourself. More than 50% of Americans experience stress due to holiday spending.

3. Get Outdoors

With the winter months fast approaching, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) also makes its appearance. Seasonal Affective Disorder are feelings of depression and loss of interest during the winter months. Going outdoors can help take your mind off these feelings. If you are struggling with Seasonal Affective Disorder know that there are tips and strategies to help ease symptoms. If these aren’t effective, reach out to your provider either virtually or in-person.

4. Move Your Body

Exercise gets your blood moving which has many positive effects, one of which can help reduce your stress levels. While the holidays are often busy, try to prioritize 30 minutes of exercise in each day. This could include going on a walk, doing a quick yoga routine or doing extra tasks around the house.

5. Don’t Lose Sight of What Really Counts

The holidays can be overwhelming and hectic and a busy time for many. Focusing on being kind to others and taking time for yourself will allow you to create memories to reflect and treasure even when the holidays are over.
