Revitalizing the Randy Wilson Track: A New Chapter for Knoxville, Iowa
In the vibrant community of Knoxville, Iowa, the Randy Wilson Track has always been more than just a place for athletes to compete. It serves as a gathering spot for families, friends and fans who share a love for sports and community events. However, after years of dedicated use, the track and its surrounding facilities were in need of significant upgrades. This outstanding facility has undergone extensive renovations to improve its appearance, functionality and accessibility for athletes and spectators. These renovations have transformed Randy Wilson Track into a modern, fully accessible facility, making it a true asset for all and symbolizes our commitment to the community’s health and well-being. Let’s explore the details of this transformation and what it means for Knoxville.
A Brief History
The Randy Wilson Track was named after a beloved coach, teacher and accomplished track star who was a member of the USA 1980 Olympics Team. It has hosted countless middle and high school track meets, the Little Panther Relays and served as the local walking track for community members. The track sits on the northwest corner of the Knoxville Community School District campus and is used daily by students and community members.
The Vision for Renovation
The renovation project aimed to achieve three key objectives: enhancing safety, improving functionality and fostering a sense of pride within the community. The renovation project was born from a vision to create a space that not only meets the needs of athletes but also serves the entire community. Local officials, school administrators and community members collaborated to develop a plan that would address existing issues while prioritizing accessibility and inclusivity.
Safety First
One of the primary focuses of the renovation was to ensure the safety of athletes and visitors. These measures included a more secure perimeter and modern bleachers for both the home and visitor sides of the stadium. New lights also better illuminate the entire facility. In addition to the lights, the Randy Wilson Track now has surveillance cameras for the first time.
Enhanced Facilities
The project began in the spring of 2022 with the installation of a new turf field and resurfacing of the eight-lane all-weather track. In the past year the lighting, fencing, scoreboard, bleachers and press box were all replaced with new, state-of-the-art equipment. A large building was also constructed to house a concession stand, restrooms and storage for both athletics and the marching band to enhance the overall experience for spectators and participants alike. These improvements make it easier for families to attend events and support local athletes, fostering a stronger sense of community.
New Bleachers
Originally, Randy Wilson Track had seating for 350 spectators and now can easily hold 2,000. The old bleachers were not only outdated, but also posed safety concerns. The new bleachers are designed to provide comfortable seating for spectators while offering better sightlines for viewing events. The addition of accessible seating ensures that everyone can enjoy the excitement of games and community events.
Modern Bathrooms
Clean and accessible restroom facilities are essential for any public venue. The renovated Randy Wilson Track features new restrooms that meet modern standards of accessibility. Family-friendly facilities, including changing tables and spacious stalls and an individual family restroom, have been included to accommodate all visitors.
Concession Stand
No sporting event is complete without a place to grab a snack or drink! The new concession stand is strategically located for easy access during events, including baseball and softball games. With a variety of food and beverage options, families can enjoy refreshments while cheering on their student athletes.
Storage Facilities
To better serve the school teams, the renovation included the addition of storage facilities for equipment. This ensures that teams have a dedicated space to store gear, making it easier to prepare for practices and events without the hassle of transporting equipment back and forth.
Enhanced Lighting
With the addition of modern lighting, nighttime events are even better. This upgrade not only improves safety but also extends the usability of the facility, allowing for evening practices and games, and community events.
Fencing and Security
A new fencing system surrounds the track, enhancing safety for both athletes and spectators. The fencing not only delineates the competition area but also prevents unauthorized access, ensuring that events can be conducted smoothly and securely.
State-of-the-Art Scoreboard
The installation of a new scoreboard is a significant enhancement that will elevate the spectator's experience. The videoboard and sound system are state-of-the-art with clear visibility from all angles, keeping everyone informed and engaged.
Press Box
The addition of a large press box allows for better media coverage and announcements during events. This facility provides space for announcers, broadcasters and media personnel, ensuring that all events can be properly documented and celebrated.
Accessibility for All
A major goal of the renovation was to make the track fully accessible for all athletes and spectators. This meant not only resurfacing the track and upgrading the field surface but also ensuring that every aspect of the facility could be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of physical ability. The renovation included:
-
Wheelchair-Accessible Pathways: New pathways connect all areas of the track, allowing easy navigation for individuals with mobility challenges.
-
Seating for All: The new bleachers feature designated accessible seating areas, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the events.
By prioritizing accessibility, the community is sending a strong message that athletics and physical activity are for everyone.
Community Engagement
One of the standout aspects of the Randy Wilson Track renovation was the level of community engagement throughout the planning and execution phases. Residents were involved in the task force that recommended this project and many local contractors were awarded the bids to complete the work. This collaborative approach not only helped ensure that the new facility meets the community’s needs but also fostered a sense of ownership among residents.
Fundraising Efforts
The renovation was made possible through a combination of public funding through the Knoxville Community School District and a large donation from Weiler, a local manufacturing company who also partners with the school to provide career experiences for students.
Homecoming Ribbon Cutting
The newly renovated Randy Wilson Track was celebrated during a ribbon cutting ceremony (pictured above) at homecoming. The event brought together athletes, performers, families, alumni and community members. Words of appreciation were given, and Randy Wilson spoke before doing the honors of cutting the yellow ribbon with three of his grandchildren (picture below). The community enjoyed a pep rally and the coronation of the homecoming king and queen following the ceremony.
A Space for Future Generations
The renovated Randy Wilson Track isn’t just about the present; it’s a commitment to the future. With improved facilities, enhanced safety features and a focus on accessibility, the track is poised to serve as a valuable resource for generations to come.
