Iowa Skilled Trades Build My Future Event: April 2022

There was a remarkable turnout at the 2022 Build My Future career event held in Greater Des Moines (DSM). This incredible hands-on exposition, sponsored by the Iowa Skilled Trades Association and the Home Builders Association (HBA) of Greater Des Moines, was organized to educate students about the amazing career opportunities in various skilled trades via virtual reality, simulators, hands on activities and displays.

Connecting with Future Industry Professionals

Over 5,200 students from more than 30 high schools across Iowa traveled to the Iowa State Fairgrounds to connect with industry professionals. We were thrilled with this year’s turnout, and for the opportunity to show the youth in our community about the success they can have in construction and skilled-trade careers. We hope the event sparked students’ interest in these jobs to help our community continue fill these much-needed roles in the region and across the state.

These high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand career options are an exciting way to promote the goal of creating a better equipped Iowa workforce, with the training and talent needed to build a successful future for our community.

This was the third year of the event in Des Moines which has more than tripled in attendance over that time. Over 176 volunteers participated in making this a great event.
