DSM Intern Connection Program Participation Leads to High Likelihood of Relocating to Des Moines
This year Greater Des Moines Partnership’s DSM Intern Connection program participants attended a variety of free professional development and social opportunities in Downtown Des Moines (DSM). Events allowed college students from over 60 colleges and universities from around the country to network with each other while getting to know businesses and leaders in the region.
Programming included session topics about ways to get involved in DSM, employment benefits and finances, networking tips, advice from young professionals and top business leaders in the region. Students who actively participated in four or more events received a Mastry of Community Leadership Certificate from The Partnership to note community engagement. This credential has proven to be yet another key differentiator for these job applicants.
DSM Intern Connection Program Success
The six DSM Intern Connection events were successful in helping immerse interns in career exploration and development experiences. According to a DSM Intern Connection follow-up survey, after attending these events more than 71% of participants would be likely or very likely to relocate to Greater Des Moines if they received a job offer. This number is higher than the national average for Intern conversion.
“I learned there are plenty of ways to get involved in the Greater Des Moines (DSM) area outside of work,” said one intern.
The 2024 DSM Intern Connection Program had 108 employers and 64 universities with at least one intern participating in the program. At the conclusion of the program, 85% of attendees would recommend the programming to their peers and 65% of attendees would accept positions from their internship employer if offered a job.
Another intern said, "It was nice to meet people that I probably never would’ve met at school but also those that are in the area and close to my town!"
The number one place where students learned about the program was through their internship employer. DSM Intern Connection provides the employer with value-added professional development and networking opportunities specifically designed for college interns. We encourage all local employers to urge their interns to take part in the program.
