Features like the skywalk system, pedestrian bridges and trails, and a variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance have made Downtown DSM an attractive destination for young professionals. The popularity of downtown continues to attract investors and developers with ideas for new downtown destinations, and new places to go are springing up every season.
The convenience and relative affordability of Downtown DSM distinguish it from the downtowns of other major cities. Since several major employers are located downtown, many young professionals living in the area can walk to work and enjoy downtown’s many restaurants and venues.
Summer in Downtown Des Moines (DSM)
In the summertime, downtown hosts a variety of outdoor festivals such as the music festival 80/35, the Des Moines Arts Festival, and the World Food & Music Festival. There’s also the weekly Farmer’s Market every Saturday morning in the summer that is famous for its scale and wide selection of fresh produce and goods.

The Young Professionals Connection (YPC) promotes an environment that attracts and retains young professionals in Greater Des Moines (DSM). YPC connects young professionals to each other and to the community through social, civic, charitable and professional development endeavors. YPC members have unique opportunities to grow personally and professionally and forge lasting relationships. They engage, connect and form a foundation for their future in DSM. YPC is an initiative of the Greater Des Moines Partnership.
