Creating a Competitive Edge in DSM By Focusing on New Business Growth, DEI + Placemaking Projects

Greater Des Moines Partnership CEO Jay Byers recently discussed what The Partnership is, momentum in Greater Des Moines (DSM), record new business filings and new economic development projects on The Iowa Podcast with Justin Brady.

DSM Momentum

With record new business filings — 33,331 new businesses in Iowa in the 2022 fiscal year — innovation and creativity are driving momentum in the state. Following disruption in the market from the pandemic, inflation and supply chain challenges, entrepreneurs are finding new opportunities not only in the state, but across the country.

The Partnership team supports new business growth by focusing on the future. What additional assistance, thought leadership and programming will help new businesses thrive and be successful in the region? A focus on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is also important. Which groups still have challenges and need more assistance? Providing these resources is part of the value that The Partnership offers.

Downtown DSM Events

Lauridsen Skatepark recently held its second Dew Tour in July of 2022. The skatepark along with Pro Iowa Stadium and Global Plaza — set to open in 2025 — are creating an outdoor sports destination here in DSM. These projects are part of a placemaking effort, showcasing the region as a place to live and grow business. Without mountains or the coast, DSM is leveraging placemaking projects, along with connected trails and water trails, to connect with up-and-coming young people to attract and retain talent. Byers said that focusing on soccer with the Pro Iowa Stadium establishes a commitment to attracting foreign-born workers (DSM has the fastest-growing foreign-born population in the Midwest, second fastest in the country) and gives the region a competitive edge.
