Hand-Rolled Bagels Debut at the 2024 Downtown Farmers’ Market
New at this summer’s Downtown Farmers’ Market presented by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines is Black Bagel, a Greater Des Moines (DSM) bagel shop established in 2024. This local vendor offers hand-rolled, fresh daily bagels in a variety of flavors and with a gluten-sensitive option. Dev, who grew up on Chicago’s north side, and Lloyd, who grew up on Chicago’s south side met, fell in love and started their small business after moving to the region in May. The duo, who were considering a move to DSM, only solidified their plans after applying and being accepted into The Market.
Black Bagel’s first Market event was on May 4, just under three weeks after their move, but they will be popping up at more Market dates this summer and fall, including on the following Saturdays:

Downtown Farmers’ Market Q+A
What can people expect from the Black Bagel booth?
Black Bagel: Everything is made within 24 hours. We wake up Friday and go through the night making bagels until 5 a.m. This month we offered a rainbow bagel for Pride month, but you can expect classic options like sesame, plain, everything, etc.
Who have you gotten to know at The Market?
BB: During our first two Market appearances, we got to know a Pakistani couple making Pakistani food. Which is delish! We also connected with Mike, another vendor who was offering honey lemonade. He was incredibly helpful, especially during our nervous moments at the Market. But everyone’s been so nice, which is something we’re not used to coming from a larger city.
Do you have any advice for others interested in becoming a vendor at The Market?
BB: Just go for it! Don’t be scared, and don’t question yourself. Also, get feedback from previous vendors if you can. Other vendors are great at giving us advice and are willing to help you. This Market is close to each other, even though it’s one of the largest, and we’re grateful for that.
Do you have any other offerings you’d like to highlight?
BB: We’re now doing pre-orders for The Market so if you order before, we can have your order ready for Market pickup. We also do local deliveries.
