Celebrating the Region Through 515 Day
On Wednesday, May 15, residents in the Greater Des Moines (DSM) region are encouraged to celebrate 515 Day. This special day has been established to honor and support the vibrant and diverse small businesses, artists, restaurants, coffee shops and other places that give charm and vibrancy to DSM.
Here are five ways you can celebrate 515 Day.
Celebrate Local Businesses
515 Day serves as a community-wide effort to encourage residents to embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship and visit local businesses. These small businesses are integral to the region, enriching our lives with their unique offerings that add a sense of place. From local retailers to neighborhood restaurants, these businesses pave the way for a lively and dynamic community. Please be intentional and visit one that day.
Support Artists and Creativity
The artistic landscape in DSM is constantly evolving and flourishing, as local artists and artists from around the world continue to make their mark on our region. You can explore local art shops, museums or art installations. For example, you can take a visit to Cowles Commons and experience “Impulse” by CS Design & Lateral Office, a temporary interactive installation comprised of oversized seesaws of various sizes with lighting and sound.
Attend Local Events and Attractions
There are several upcoming events on or near 515 Day. Examples include the Ankeny Area Chamber of Commerce’s Workforce Day on May 14, the Urbandale Chamber of Commerce’s Central Iowa Business Conference on May 23, the colorful displays of Dutch heritage at Pella's Tulip Time festival from May 2 – 4, and the Downtown Farmers’ Market presented by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines that begins May 4 and continues each Saturday. On May 15, you can grab your teammates and hit the first, Out to Lunch series event of the season at Principal Financial Group’s campus featuring local food trucks and live entertainment. Come and visit Downtown Des Moines and take in all it has to offer! By attending these gatherings, we foster a sense of togetherness and community spirit that defines the essence of 515 Day celebrations.
Use DSM Local Guides
The Partnership values the importance of supporting local which is why we started the DSM Local campaign. This campaign focuses on showcasing cities and neighborhoods across the region and what they have to offer. The money you spend here is more likely to stay here — and that's something worth buying into.
With the DSM Local guides, you’re able to embrace the spirit of community on 515 Day by supporting local businesses in various ways.
